the party cake for Gandalf's (one of the corgis) 1st birthday last weekend.
He liked it, but he is not a food dog, he was too spastic and interested

one, loved it and eagerly finished what was left." ~Christina

Here are free, easy
and tasty dog birthday cake recipes.
Dog Cake Tips
Frosting ideas: cream cheese, peanut butter, yogurt, Neufchatel
cheese or cottage cheese. Stiffen icing with meringue powder, which
is basically powdered egg whites.
Dogs shouldn't have as much cake as people eat. A bite or two will
thrill the dogs at your party, and will avoid tummy upset later.
Any unfamiliar dog food can cause digestive upset.
Use organic peanut butter, rather than the major brands. It has
fewer trans fats and is better for your dog.
If your dog is allergic to wheat, substitute rice flour.
Nuts are often not broken down during digestion, so be sure to
chop nuts well when using them in recipes.
Raisins and grapes have been known to cause diarrhea and vomiting
in dogs when fed in large quantities. Use raisins sparingly for decorating
cakes.
Carob, a dog-safe chocolate substitute, can be purchased in powdered
form or as carob chips at many grocery and health food stores.
For candles, use rawhide chews, Milk Bones or purchase bone-shaped
candles to add the finishing touch to your masterpiece.
Naturally sweet, colorful and flavorful, this cake is simple and
easy to make. Great for Fall.
"Thank you for the free cake recipes. I get invited to a dog

Safety Tips for Dog Parties
Keep an outdoor party to an hour, especially if you're inviting
less active dogs.
Be sure there's adequate shade and water for everyone. A fun way
to keep dogs hydrated is to freeze a large block of ice in a plastic
food container. Place it within reach of all dogs and allow it to
melt during the party.
Don't have some dogs on leash and others off-leash. Dogs act more
defensive when they're on a leash, and could be at a disadvantage
with others who are off-leash.
Bring pickup bags (enough for everyone).
Give treats that don't last longer than a gulp. If a dog takes
a larger treat away to sit and eat it, a skirmish could result.
If you're having a party in your back yard, don't put food down
on the ground, or your own dog may get territorial.
The safest way to introduce food to a group of dogs is to have
the owners feed bite-size snacks to their dogs.
Let guests know that dogs may need to be separated if squabbles
break out.
The safest mix of guests is equal numbers of males and females.
If any guests are not spayed or neutered, let other guests of non-spayed/neutered
dogs know it.
During social time, throw a ball to give the dogs something to
chase and focus on. Be sure to have enough toys for everyone to avoid
possessiveness.
Ask your vet about foods that you're planning to give the dogs
at the picnic, to be sure that you're not serving anything unsafe.
Some foods, though not toxic, should still not be served in large
quantities (examples: macadamia nuts, raisins).
Dog Birthday Activities & Games
Need some ideas for activities for your dog birthday party guests?
Try these dog birthday games and fun ideas:
Provide dog chew toys to play with. Frisbees and balls are great
for a game of fetch (or chase, depending on the dog). A large hard
plastic ball is great for group play, and won't pop.
Use obedience commands as dog games. Practice sit, stay, down,
come, etc. with food as a reward (this is the safest way to give
picnic food to canine guests, as it reduces fighting).
Have a sit contest. The dog who stays in the sit position longest
wins.
Here's a fun dog game from Nancy Furstinger, author of "Fun
Stuff You Can Do With Your Dog: An Interactive Dog Book (Doral Publishing):
Play musical chairs with your party guests. When the music stops,
all the players put their dogs in a "sit." The last one
to sit in each round exits the game until one winner remains.
Invite a trainer or groomer for a brief, fun lesson and to answer
questions. Ask the guest speaker to come with some funny stories
about his or her work. A good storyteller can have your guests howling
about mishaps, embarrassing moments, dogs who got the best of them,
etc.
Let the party dogs figure out their own games by allowing them
to socialize in a fenced area. Take the people out of the area so
the dogs can interact naturally with each other.
Hire an artist for face painting for the people, or caricatures
of the dogs. Party Puppy, in San Diego, will also supply a DJ, canine
massage therapist, performing dogs, magicians and clowns ... you
name it.
Play "find the toy" by hiding a toy under a cup or blanket.
This can be a fun party game for dogs.
Invite a portrait photographer to take candid pictures of your
guests' dogs. These often reflect the dog's personality better than
posed studio portraits.
Here's a classic dog party game: have a relay race or a recall
race. In a recall race, all the dogs are taken to one end of a flat
area. Owners stand at the other end and call their dogs. The dog
who reaches its owner first gets a prize (and everyone gets a treat,
of course).
Try a dog/owner look-alike contest.
Give door prizes for the biggest, smallest and shaggiest dog, or
for the guest who traveled the farthest distance to attend the party.
It's a great way to hand out your goody bags to all your guests.
Dog Party Snacks
You can buy commercially available party trays or dress up ordinary
dog biscuits yourself, with dog-safe carob or yogurt and food coloring.
Here's a fantastic way to make very fancy party bones yourself,
to give as gifts or to make an elegant party tray for your dog birthday
party.
What you'll need:
12-15 Milk Bones or other dog biscuit. Note: the bigger the biscuit,
the easier they are to decorate, so get the biggest ones that your
guests can eat. They can always be broken in half for smaller dogs
when it's time to eat them.
Yogurt or carob chips. You can find these at many health food stores.
Carob is a dog-safe chocolate substitute.
Food coloring, if you wish to color the yogurt (great for birthday
treats, Valentine's Day treats, Easter and Christmas treats).
Ribbon, sprinkles, and other food decorations. You can find sugar-free
sprinkles at some grocery stores, but the amount of sugar your dog
will ingest by having one of these treats is relatively small, so
use the regular ones from the cake decorating aisle if you can't
find sugar-free ones.
Step 1 -- Heat carob or yogurts in a double boiler. You can also
use a glass bowl over a pan of water at a low boil. Do not allow
the boiling water to touch the bowl. Stir occasionally. If you're
coating your biscuits in carob and you need them to stay hard for
shipping or other handling, here's a bakery trick. Purchase some
paraffin wax in the canning supplies. Shave off a little bit of paraffin
into the carob and stir it in. A small amount of wax is completely
digestible, will not affect the flavor, and makes the carob coating
hard and dry to the touch, which is great for shipping or if your
treats have to be outside in warm weather.
Step 2 -- When the coating is melted but not runny, dip half of
each biscuit into the coating. Lay on a piece of waxed paper or cooking
parchment on a cookie sheet to cool and dry. Sprinkle and lightly
press decorations into the soft coating before it cools, or just
roll the cookie around in the sprinkles after dipping in the coating.
Step 3 -- When coating is cool and dry to the touch, wrap a piece
of ribbon around the center of each bone, where the coating ends.
Tie in a bow and cut off ends.
These can make very pretty party trays. Just make sure to label
them clearly as dog treats, and make human snacks available to your
human guests. If you're giving these as parting gifts or shipping
them, try putting them in a candy or bakery box with tissue. Alternate
the bones so they lie head-to-toe for a pretty arrangement. They
will make a delicious and memorable gift.
Party Trays
Make cute and fun party trays by buying or making a variety of
dog cookies. Arrange them in a new shiny large aluminum dog bowl.
Or arrange them on a plate with confetti and ribbon around the edge.
Here's a helpful hint from our customers who have had parties: Some
dog cookies look good enough to eat, so it's a good idea to put a
small sign next to treats intended for canine guests.
Party Favors
Make your own party favors with dog cookies, decorator cellophane
bags and fancy ribbon. The sky's the limit. On your buffet table
(away from inquisitive noses), arrange your party favors in paw-print
bags tied with ribbon. You can purchase inexpensive charms and embellishments
from scrapbook supply retailers and attach them to the bags.
Hand these out to guests as they leave to reduce squabbling among
dogs, if you think it will be a problem. Remember, too, that inexpensive
toys can be party favors.
A tennis ball and some treats are all some dogs need for a good
time. Tie a dog biscuit around the neck of a cute toy for all your
guests, or mix toys and treats in a favor bag.

Apple Cinnamon Party Cookies
Hard and crunchy, these round treats have a naturally sweet flavor
from apples and cinnamon. Make enough to share!
1 large apple
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup oatmeal
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour plus 1/8 cup whole wheat flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Core, slice and mince the apple (use
a food processor if you have one). In a large bowl, combine the minced
apple bits, honey, water, cinnamon, and oatmeal. Gradually blend
